Environmentally Induced Illnesses |
Healthy People,
Healthy Places is designed to be part of the solution to the problem
of environmentally induced illnesses. This site will introduce you to Peggy Wolff,
an environmental health nurse, and will provide you with a wealth of
resources along the way. Problem:
Harmful chemicals in our everyday lives are causing untold environmental
illnesses. What is an environmentally induced illness? An environmentally induced illness is any health condition that is caused or exacerbated by exposure to toxic chemicals. Some examples of environmentally induced illnesses are allergies, asthma, cancer, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). Click
for more information about Environmentally Induced Illnesses including
MCS. Solution:
Peggy Wolff's Environmental Health Counseling What is environmental health counseling? Environmental
health counseling blends personal health with environmental health.
Personal health, one's inner milieu, includes the physical, mental,
emotional and most importantly,
the spiritual aspects of oneself. Environmental health, one's outer milieu,
includes all physical spaces in which one spends time: home,
school, workplace, church, even the car. There are three
main groups of people who most frequently use the services of an environmental
health counselor. First are people who have identified either
their homes or their places of work as adversely affecting their health.
Second are people who have been diagnosed with environmentally related
illnesses such as allergies, asthma, chronic fatigue, or chemical sensitivities. The third group includes people who are sick
and don't know why. What can you expect if you go to Peggy Wolff for environmental health counseling? 1. An empathetic listener from someone who has gone through a serious environmental illness 2. A nontoxic office or phone 3. History taking, identifying and prioritizing problems of both the client and the client's environment 4. Expert advice on ways to handle the problem(s) 5. Suggestions on useful resources 6. Home visit when indicated 7. Referrals to appropriate health care practitioners and environmental housing specialists 8.
